Things he thought she missedA Story by nomoonteaShort story as about lies and deception.
The windows was covered by something that looked like a brown paper bag, ripped open, except that it was cut to fit perfectly. The door was locked. WTF she was thinking when he opened the door and let her in. She went inside quietly not sure of what was going on. He was all smiles and charm, so glad to see her. He walked around his desk and sat down. She sat down on the chair beside it.
I don't remember the reason she was there. If there was one. She may have just swung by to say hi on her way home. She could smell his Old Spice hanging in the air. A little stale. He was in his Dress Whites and he looked so polished and put together. Her handsome husband. After a few minutes of small talk he said, "sit over there". And pointed to the far wall with a stiff metal and negative couch like thing. She stood and asked why. "Because I don't want you to sit there" . He said. Just like that, like it was all matter of fact, and believe it or not, she obeyed like a good Stepford wife. They talked a bit more about the weather or one of the kids, and he stood up. She couldn't help but see him adjusting his Navy Regulation pants. Then he walked to the door and opened it. You know she saw all this clearly but she simply filed it somewhere to access later. I think she knew what was going on, but I don't know why she played. Dumb. She always played dumb. He walked across the room and opened a store room door. Now this could be innocent she thought at the same time as she knew it wasn't. "Hey. Come look at this he said as he wrapped his arm around her waist and led her to the store room door wide open. She looked inside at all the meticulously organized shelves and file cabinets. It was scrupulios. Just the way he liked things."I finally got it organized he said with a lowered voice, not sure of himself. Kind of doubtful like, but he also sounded proud . Like he really accomplished something. I don't know what happened next, except that she turned around and took notice there was no one there. Did she sit? Did she chatt a little while longer? I don't know, but she went home and cooked dinner. Can you believe that? She went home and cooked dinner. There were other things, too. There was the time he told her, that if she found any underwear the dog drug them in. Good Lord the dog had been gone for weeks. Was he so stupid he thought she was that stupid? They never turned up, but the shoes did. A pair of women's scrunched up under the coffee table. Besides asking where the b***h was, she did nothing. There was really very little she could have done. He'd only deny it. He didn't care about evidence he'd come up with something and it would be left at that. She felt a little bit numb with twinge of hate. She sure did. And then they were going to a Christmas party with friends. They stopped at a Dunken Donuts in that little town, and when she went to the ladies room, on the partition between stalls there was a heart drawn in sharpie, and it said, I love Fred the recruiter. She didn't mention it, and they went to the party. . Those were the high lights. But there were a lot of things she ignored. Like the car seat pulled up, and the long black hair on his Navy whites. It's your hair he said as she held it with her thumb and finger, between them. It was long and black. Her hair was cut short and dyed blonde. All this was many years ago. She finally came out of her stuper. Scorched earth you might say. Everything burned. . But there are still things he thinks she missed, Things he pulled off in those dazzling whites. © 2025 nomoontea |
