56 BPM (Tempo of your Heart)

56 BPM (Tempo of your Heart)

A Poem by Olmsted A. T.

56 BPM (Tempo of your heart)

So I thought I’d learn a song or two by some of your favorite singers
Began studying the magic of how they cast their spell

Was a little more than halfway through the first verse i had chosen
when I had to stop …

and be honest with myself

I know I can’t do
what they excel at
I can only offer up
the best of me
It was like catching lashes
with numb fingers
awake in an
ocean of dreams

So
shifting gears -
i rounded the angles of my words
and instead spent more focus on my emotions
and quite less on turns of phrase
That won’t sit well
within a charmed melody

see

Seven Syllables
doesn’t mean f**k all
If she can’t join in
sing a long
Whether in a whispered tone
Even she
can barely hear
Or at the top
of her lungs
Hair drenched with
rain
in a field

There’s no better
way to say I love you
than in 100 part Harmony
even if some are rushing or dragging
off time
and others
a perfect fifth
out of key

So after contemplation
and reflecting
on knowledge gained

I made sure of simple phrases
Tried to
nullify
clichés
wrapped them all
inside a package
With no expiration date
And as I worked
I kept my attention
on every smile collected
in my memory
And I realize it’s not perfect
But still better by a mile
At minimum
a decent place
to start ….
To think
it all began ….
at
56
bpm ….
the tempo of
your heart ….
