Subtle & Sweet

Subtle & Sweet

A Poem by parker

I thought that I could fix you.
Thought I could gather the pieces
of your scattered, broken heart
and stick them together
with tape and glue and ribbon
like a page in my scrapbook.

I thought that I could heal you.
Make up for all the others
that used and abused you,
that broke you and left you
in the wounded form I found you.

You said that you could love me.
And I believe you did, in your way,
but I don't think you understand
as much about love as you say.

No matter what you say, I loved you.
Love doesn't have to be
all roses and candles and starry eyes.
My love is subtle and sweet,
quiet and honest and sincere.
Don't make me into a sad story,
another one of the girls
who lied to you and left you.
Someday you'll understand
that you can't throw away every woman
who doesn't love you exactly
as your storybooks say she should.
