MARIA’S DEPARTURE

MARIA’S DEPARTURE

A Poem by Peter Rogerson
"

A few lines about the folly of faith

"

Feel the wind, sister,

Feel it on your skin,

Feel the way it’s blowing,

Like a breath of sin.

Fear the serpent, sister,

And it’s fabled hiss,

Fear the lies they told you

And its fork-tongued kiss.

Fear your Master, sister,

Unclothed and then unshod,

Fear the breath he’s breathing,

Uncompromising god…

Fear your flesh, dear sister,

The sins you could commit,

And wonder at your fading

Which side you ought to sit.

Feel the wind, sister,

Blasting from the west,

Feel it whilst you’re dying,

The day you love the best.

What is your faith, sister?

Cling with your fading breath,

Pray that the lies they told you

Triumph over death.
