a tribute to ...

This poem, dedicated one of my favourite jazz musicians, and the man who inspired and influenced my sense for music the most. A simple experiment, and simple homage to the greatest of greatest.

orange glows from cigarettes, I

 

was part of the crowd,

 

the musicians started to play, the

 

color of the night, black, the men,

 

of dark skin and grey suits, a tribute to

 

her is played, her orange

 

dress, accented by the brushing drums, but

 

then, her dress, once orange became

 

blue, as the saxophone blew softly like

 

silk, and her song, never stopped.

I don't know the musicians either, but the girl is a snapshot of something wonderful, an image burned into the mind, bursting with life. Orange and blue are all I see in front of a dark, smooth background. The best, best part, of course, is the clever little sentence you have spelled out with the first letter of each line, saying the same thing as the poem itself, but bringing it into startling focus.
