Putting on the style for Bro salvatoreA Poem by Poeticpiersnarrative verse
Putting on the Style
The Maitre D in evening dress
was greeting the important guests
He did not know and had to guess.
Where we should rank amongst the rest.
He had not seen us there before. So suitably obsequious
He judged us by the clothes we wore.
his Bonhomie was spurious.
WE chose to act as though we were
expecting him to bow and scrape
As though we were superior
To us a most delightful jape.
Two pensioners out on a spree
Our fortieth anniversary
Though we were dressed impeccably.
We were not what we seemed to be.
He thought we were celebrities
and treated us as though we were.
Which we accepted gracefully
We were the best dressed couple there.
Clad in old fashioned finery.
well cut though madly out of date.
It demonstrated quality
Our status hard to estimate.
The Maitre D made up his mind .
Reacted deferentially
Which served to show how he defined
an unknown couple instantly.
We had a most delightful meal
accompanied by the best champagne.
So like a dream it seemed unreal.
That we resolved to come again.
Perhaps next anniversary
when had saved sufficient brass
WE had impressed the Maitre D
As patrons of the highest class.
I paid of course by credit card
as though we dined our frequently
Although in fact we had saved hard
for this our annual spending spree.
The doorman was instructed to
inform us when our limousine
arrived but still nobody knew.
Just who were or might have been.
