Her Own Choice

Her own choice

She could no longer cope alone.
Knew all too well that it was true
and there was something else she knew.
Her race was run ,time to move on.

She did not wish to vegetate
in some well run establishment
Where lunch became the main event.
With no attempt to stimulate.

The workings of an agile mind,
trapped inside a useless shell.
A body which had served her well.

Before her health was undermined,
by ailments which progressively
destroyed all of her abilities.
The time had come to quit the game.

So she decided she would die
in her own bed in her own home
To be pain free would be welcome.
So she died voluntarily.

The cause of death no mystery.
She chose to exercise her right,
While she had the will to write
the finish to her life story.

I didn't get the hint of suicide until I read another review, I got the vibe she let herself die, like when someone loses a partner and they die of a broken heart. I like that. Very nice story compacted into a poem. I am going to be honest though, when I say the rhyme scheme kinda threw me off, I lean towards free verse, but to each their own. Thank you for the read and for sharing.

Man, so many people are lost to suicide... and i've noticed this topic a lot in your writing lately... but aside from that your words were powerful as always... and your language is not dense and hard to understand. The message is clear. This piece spoke to me... the sound is still ringing in my ears. I really enjoyed it, as all of your works.

A poignant story, Piers, one which will become ever more topical as this generation proceeds. We've already had a euthanasia bill passed in the Northern Territory here, by their Territory government, only to see it squashed by the Federal Government. But it's only a question of time and economics. By the time that 40% of the population is over 65, and is being supported by 60% of the population still working, it will be seen as expeditious to get rid of as many baby boomers as possible to relieve the welfare bill. In the meantime it's still regarded as a crime by those people who can never seem to mind their own business in these matters.
