Stupidity

Stupidity

A Poem by Poeticpiers

Stupidity.

We celebrate our dead heroes.

Their white headstones arranged in rows.

To mark where soldiers bodies lie.

They are no longer friends and foes

War cemeteries are tended well

in honour of the men who fell

It is the least that we can do

for men who died by shot and shell.

Each single death a tragedy,

 each one recorded carefully.

To satisfy the bureaucrats

 who collate deaths statistically.

I wonder why we cannot see.

That death alone claims victory.

Each new war adds to the score

of people dying uselessly.

Though we remember them with pride.

The countless men who sadly died.

Each thinking that their cause was just.

Involuntary suicide.

We celebrate our dead heroes

with white headstones arranged in rows.

Yet we still send young men to die

And always will do I suppose.

We do not learn from history

For no good reason I can see.

That wars prove nothing in the end

Except how stupid we can be.

Mankind (as a species overall) will always be doomed to repeat the past. If a generation does not live it, they will not believe it as a reality. Only as a legend or myth as more time passes. I feel your pain here. I rant against the horrors of war often. Good write. Maybe someday the lesson will be learned, but I do doubt it.

This is so very well written and expressed. Full of emotion and compassion. I will keep my war opinions to myself however. I loved this poem.

I could not but agree with you my friend..
its a great loss even one death..its not worth it..wars was never the solution
maybe only in very few incidents ,but in all there could be talks and reason
we should not always hurry for the sword..let it be the last solution
i would not say its brave to shows muscles all the time
i think if we showed more brains we could solve lots and lots
without the shedding of even one drop of blood
as you say war is the only winner in the end
and every body lose..if there is just one death
how i loved your words, every writing to condemn wars should be appreciated and respected
as some down there said this may never change the minds of those in power
but if lots talk against the evils of war ,i think those words would be heard someday..
lovely write..

I'm with you on that, Poeticpiers. I don't feel I hold the same views as most in this dept because while I do love our country, some things it represents are just awful, in my opinion. I will always hold a soft spot and much respect for those that fight for our rights but my allegiance fails to go much further that that. I love your poem.

War is a showing of a nation's power and strength.. yet today we do not want to see the full strength as we really know what it could do.. yet we still continue down that old path... running in circles.. how DOES a world evolve in such a manner???

Many of your stanzas hit home.. and yes we should honour those who do fight or fall for us.. but I would like to see the military become more of crisis for peace.. bringing food, water and supplies to needy countries..so that the poor in other countries do not fall to terrorist groups..and crime organizations. Canada does this so frequently and I am proud to say I am Canadian for that reason. How often does Canada get terrorist attacks??? Is it because we are diverse and believe in peace for the main part? We can never stop believing or having faith that peace and freedom may come one day. Our Country stands for hope.. and preserving peace everywhere!

Every word you wrote, rings so true to me. War is such a touchy subject with most people and I wish everyone would just open their eyes and realize what is really happening. This was beautifully penned, with sadness and a touch of hope. Great job!
