Beyond our Ken

Cyhydedd Fer

A granite headstone stands alone.

Who’s buried here cannot be known.

The stone has stood for centuries

through summers heat and winters freeze.

The stone remains a mystery

and no man knows its history.

Carved deep by some forgotten hand

are marks that none can understand.

Though learned men from far and wide

have studied it they can’t decide.

What these strange engravings mean.

Although are still crisp and clean.

They bear no resemblance to

 any language old or new.

And to this day the stone still stands

and still nobody understands.

What is engraved upon the stone

Its meaning still remains unknown

A challenge to the minds of men

A code that cannot be broken.

Though men are searching for the key

which will unlock the mystery.

The headstone keeps it secrets well

and what it knows it will not tell.

Perhaps no man will ever know

the message so carved so long ago.

A riddle that cannot be solved.

Therefore it must go unresolved.

Though men have tried and will still try.

The stone retains its mystery.

The granite headstone stands alone.

Who lies beneath is still not known.
