What might have been

What might have been

A Poem by Poeticpiers
"

variant sonnet

"

What might have been.

Forget-me-nots still grow beside the stream.

As they used to do when were both sixteen.

When I look back at what might have been.

But we were too foolish to pursue that dream.

I was selected for a football team.

You went to college studied medicine.

We followed the advice of our close kin

We both accepted other people’s schemes.

And  though we chose to go our separate ways.

We both achieved some measure of success..

I still recall those golden summer days

when we were young and knew true happiness.

It seems success is just a passing phase.

As you grow old it seems to matter less.

this has the feeling of some personal experience coming through, only in your golden years do you appreciate what you have "lost" when you where "the young ones"

Blessed be,

So much feeling in this piece, it moves me. And the truth in the last two lines is priceless. It's such a shame that we only learn these lessons when too much time has gone by to make a different choice. Beautifully penned, you are a master.
