Pointless exercise.A Poem by Poeticpiersnarrative versePointless exercise. Mankind is obsessed by measurement of length and breadth and weight and size. Continually and restlessly they try by observation and experiment To measure everything accurately. Of what avail is it to us to know The exact distance to the nearest star When we already know it is too far For us to even attempt to go. To measure everything accurately. It seems to me to be superfluous.. Some things are not possible to measure. The depth of despair the height of pleasure. The mind of man forever curious Can’t measure everything accurately.. We must accept that it is improbable and totally unneccessary. But still we try unsuccessfully to attempt to do the impossible and measure everything accurately. Obsessively we are compelled to try although we lack the capability. By curiosity we can’t defy. Inventing new technology to measure everything accurately. With length and breadth and weight we’ve had success Because dimensions do not alter much. Solid things we can see and weigh and touch. But with abstract concepts a great deal less. We cannot measure accurately. Time appears to be much more flexible. It seems it can increase or slow its pace There is one problem that we have to face. That as yet we are not capable of measuring everything accurately. Tuesday, 13 April 2010 http:// blog.myspace.com/poeticpiers © 2010 Poeticpiers |
