Guilty or innocent

Guilty or innocent

A Poem by Poeticpiers

Just for fun

"

Guilty or innocent?

I am a kleptomaniac

I tend to take things easily

and very seldom give them back

They have become my property.

Shoplifting is my favourite game.

I can outwit security

Although I find it rather tame.

No challenge to someone like me.

Because I dress respectably

I do not rate a second glance.

I use my ingenuity

to take advantage of each chance.

To pocket something valuable.

I’m rather fond of jewellery.

I think it most improbable

that any one might suspect me.

Should I be caught then I will plead

 temporary insanity.

A plea that’s certain to succeed

I’m sure to be found not guilty.

I am a kleptomaniac

I am programmed genetically

I’m also an amnesiac

 I do forget so easily.

What I have stolen and from where.

I am compelled I have to steal.

My afflictions not too rare..

If you accept that it is real.

 Psychiatrists in my defence

will quote from cases they have known.

That will make the difference.

I won’t rely on that alone.

To save me from a prison cell

I will enlist the sympathy

Of jury members who can’t tell

With any kind of certainty

If I’m a kleptomaniac

or just a very clever thief.

I am quite sure that they will back.

The experts strongly held belief.

That I’m in need of therapy

Which of course they can supply

Which I will accept happily.

I have faith in psychiatry.

Ach, the sheer variety of the human species...and how we are disposed to see things and people in different lights. Perhaps we sympathise with your subject because he seems daring, cunning and alive. Yet were he to steal from me or was my insurance premium to go up beause of him then he is a thief who must be locked up. Perhaps we can even harbour both views simultaneously...and maybe other views of him. Personally I am disposed to be indifferent, but that may be the very worst of standpoints as to be disengaged from society does not seem healthy for anyone. But, what society? We seems more a chaos of self-assertive individuals at odds with each other. Or withdrawn into our private retreats.

Very entertaining read. Seeing a phychiatrist is probably a relief to those who steal and want to avoid time in a cell. I think he's guilty by the way. Ha
Great write.
