Until Next Year.

Until Next Year.

Until Next Year.

As Halloween approaches I

grow more anxious every day.

Although I know the reason why.

I find it difficult to say.

That I believe the old legends.

The spirits of the dead are free

To wreak revenge or make amends

And have free choice which it shall be.

I lost a friend on All Souls eve.

He disappeared without a trace.

I may be wrong but I believe.

Some evil spirit took his place.

Although I see him frequently.

He’s not the man I used to know.

What other answer could there be.

I’m sure my friend was forced to go.

Some evil spirit wears his face.

It’s something which our forebears knew

 That unclean spirits can replace

a man. They were sure it was true.

What they believed may not be true

I must admit that’s possible.

You are free to do what you want to.

I will stay where I am comfortable.

Safe in my home behind locked doors.

I’ll watch and pray throughout the night.

To me it seems the wisest course

to stay inside until day light.

The rising sun will put to flight

the wandering spirits whom I fear.

They can’t resist the powers of light.

So I am safe until next year.

Go out-- face the temptation of doing something we normally wouldn't do and deal with the consequences or play it safe "behind locked doors". Even if we play it safe-- temptations always make their way back around as the poem makes clear. Thought provoking poem and well wrote-- very enjoyable to read.

What a darkly fascinating piece. You create such a sense of mystery about the season, and with this imagery comes a shadow of what lies ahead. Powerfully voiced.
