Legacy

Ghosts from the past, our ancestors.

Though long since dead are part of us.

WE must accept this truth of course.

Our forbears weren’t all glorious.

If you research your family tree

You’ll be surprised by what you find.

Most forbears were quite ordinary.

But some of them have left behind.

Abilities and qualities.

Which are passed down through their offspring

in varying quantities.

You can be sure of just one thing.

Today we are the latest batch

of evolutions mix and match.

I really enjoyed the direction of this poem. I especially liked the ending couplet, which delivered your overall message well. It leaves a lingering thought with your reader, and creates thought well after the poem has been read. The cadence of your lines was also good, as was your choice in rhymes.

If we look into our past family history we will find the backbone that built this great land... even the common people are significant in humanity and progress.

I often think about this very thing, we tend to make our ancestors into movie characters sometimes, there lives in snapshot where the story can be boiled down to two hours. There lives seemed so much more exciting when truth be told, you are probably just as exciting as most of them. My mom tells a story about my Uncle fighting Sonny Liston in prison and getting put into the hospital....not sure if its true, and I think probably not, But she sure believes it is. Puts a little shine on an otherwise ordinary uncle. This is a great thought provoking romp...nice job.
