Fly-Thru

Fly-Thru

A Poem by Pete

Hundreds of geese flock to Christman Park - The Record Herald

down at the park today
flock of geese picking at the ground through last night's miniscule snowfall
must have been about a hundred of them
voicing their complaints

i found a bag of discarded mcdonald's french fries in the parking lot
decided to feed it to them
stirring them into a honking frenzy
they surrounded me
nearly knocking me over

instantly i became a valued part of the flock
a member of the fraternity
with a memory for eternity

like a surprise attack
my only regret is that i hadn't more fries

nor the means to buy each of them a big mac

I love your title, reminiscent of how the middle of this country is often referred to as "the fly-thru states". That's your midland perspective on the migration trajectory, them geese are just flying thru. This might be the most personally friendly I've ever seen you emote in a nature poem. Oft times you seem aloof, as if something in nature is being observed by you, without getting involved. This time, you really get involved with your nature subjects & it changes everything about the way your poem feels. I've done a walking loop around a pond with geese in my past & I would not feed geese becuz they are SO AGGRESSIVE, even without a hint of food. I find your affection noble (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
