Candles And Handles

Faith, indeed, is all the reform that is needed; it is itself a reform. - Thoreau

chest heaving
hands wringing
unable to speak
inhaling incense as i'm incensed
i mouth the words to an ardent prayer
sniffling as i wipe away the tears
searching for an answer in the weather
in anything
anywhere and everywhere

twirling the cross hanging 'round my neck
fingers running back and forth
tracing the length of its chain
trying to measure the depth of my faith

i'm still standing
'cuz god answers prayers that were never even prayed
i'm the one who strayed
after all
i don't know what i really want
what i can even handle

as i search for a new way to light an old candle
