i hear the scritch-scratch of the past at the back door
it quickly becomes a relentless, pounding knock
with tears in my eyes and a knot in my stomach, i peek through the curtains

no one's home

"We are made happy when reason can discover no occasion for it. The memory of some past moments is more persuasive than the experience of present ones. There have been visions of such breadth and brightness that these motes were invisible in their light." - Thoreau

The past can be a trap or it can make amazing memories.

NO one's home...yes, I feel that way too...sometimes the past can just keep scratching at the door like a cat...and I am glad I don't have one of those cat doors that will just let past thoughts come and go as they please.
Peaking out at what if's is as far as I want to take it...No company thank you.

Wonderful work on the poem, Pete. I can actually empathize feeling the anguish and fear peeking through the curtains. Thank you for sharing this work.
