Doin' Time

Doin' Time

A Poem by Pete
"

We never exchange more than three words with a Friend in our lives on that level to which our thoughts and feelings almost habitually rise. - Thoreau

"
Scribe jailed for reporting on Wuhan Covid outbreak - News Today | First with the news

shackled
cuffed
rebuffed
thrown up against a wall and roughed
hands behind back
legs spread
paddy wagon keeps on rollin'
a life sentence
no defense
throwin' myself on the mercy of the court
hopin' the time is short

hated
fated
incarcerated
case ineloquently stated
striped suit never gets old
cell always looks dark and cold
guilty as charged
they cut off all of my hair
prayin' i don't get the chair
or a lethal injection
lots of time for deep reflection
i want to confess
but my moods are a mess
feelings constantly in motion
i'm just a

prisoner of emotion

Author's Note

Pete
"Why the jailer does not leave open his prison doors, - why the judge does not dismiss his case, - why the preacher does not dismiss his congregation! It is because they do not obey the hint God gives them, nor accept the pardon which he freely offers to all." - Thoreau

Out of control emotions can lead to life sentences or even worse. Pushed too far everything can be lost in a snap moment. Can't think of anything worse than being incarcerated for life. Then there are the others who have erected their own invisible cell walls. Emotions can do that too. Interesting read Pete.

Things in life happen and there is always a consequence to our actions; some positive and some negative. We are left to deal with the emotions that we ourselves have caused in many cases.

Amen to that, and I'm not even a praying kind of person. Wonderful Thoreau quote and poem penned, Pete. They both compliment each other and makes the theme of the work that much more powerful and thought provoking. Thank you for sharing.
