When One Plus One Is None

When One Plus One Is None

A Poem by Pete
"

Be it life or death, we crave only reality - Thoreau

"
Lynn Heritage State Park (Essex National Heritage Area)

everyday at my eden by the inlet
on the outskirts of a putrid city
walking the rocks that separate washed sea from dessicated land
always stopping at one stone in particular
checking the tide and demeanor of the water
teetering on the edge
i think about letting go and falling in
what would happen
would anyone care
someone would probably just stare
not a whole lot more to really do there

seagulls, fish and decay would certainly come
eventually stripping my flesh bare
regardless of what i wear
or the style of despair in my hair
all of my troubles evaporating
my remaining goodness abating
truth dictating
evil, sin, unforgiveness and reality trying to do the liberating
life and death separating
god and satan debating
heaven and hell equating

no doubt
it would give someone something to talk about
i wonder if it would make the local news that day
or what they'd say from the quay

come what may

Author's Note

Pete
“Whether he sleeps or wakes, whether he runs or walks, whether he uses a microscope or a telescope, or his naked eye, a man never discovers anything, never overtakes anything or leaves anything behind, but himself. Whatever he says or does he merely reports himself. If he is in love, he loves; if he is in heaven, he enjoys, if he is in hell, he suffers. It is his condition that determines his locality.” - Thoreau
