Leave Me Be

Leave Me Be

A Poem by Pete
"

I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual. It is surprising how contented one can be with nothing definite - only a sense of existence. - Thoreau

free but damned
damned but free
sand trapped in an hour glass
tide-less sea
jolly green giant hawking a can-less pea
much but nothing
nothing but much
a fallen tree branch is my crutch
this life doesn't play fair
so i strum a guitar made of thin air
with poisoned fingers
only the melody lingers
angels and demons the backup singers
let it wail
truth will never fail
walk on water
sink on earth
all you barren women in cold, lonely stables giving birth
boy or girl
stop trashing my world
claiming victory with your tattered flag half-unfurled

strip me naked
make me bleed
open the good book of a fallen creed
bend over, dig deep and plant a seed
smile at the wind
sign on the dotted line of no-rescind
climb aboard a stray cloud
look away so you're disavowed
take a seat way in the back
don't be too proud
doesn't matter, as long as it's good and loud

cry and wail
succeed but fail
young but old
old but young
a soul is never done
loud as loud can be
even harder some
crack the percussion of my ears
erase all of my lactating fears
as my life continues to shed lost years
take my possessions
steal my pride
tell the truth then turn and lie
feed me trash
pile the leftovers in a heap of ash
take your spent cigarettes and weed
your empty bottles and speed
leave the sperm of my essence alone
don't bother texting my phone
'cuz no one's home
blind me eyes to see
a sweet song holds the key
so just you leave me be

"To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, nor even to found a school, but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity and trust." - Thoreau

indeed ... :)
A deep lacerating poem unfolding a story with addictions and liberations. The author is reclaiming lost territories and identities. Ending is powerful and freeing.
Awesome Pete.
