What men call social virtues, good fellowship, is commonly but the virtue of pigs in a litter, which lie close together to keep each other warm. - Thoreau
"The philosopher's conception of things will, above all, be truer than other men's, and his philosophy will subordinate all the circumstances of life. To live like a philosopher is to live, not foolishly, like other men, but wisely and according to universal laws." - Thoreau

It seems a bit gloomy and cynical, nonetheless. I love what Jewel Kilcher wrote, "Maybe if we are surrounded in beauty, one day we will become what we see, I'd rather view the world from a different angle. We are everyday angels. Be careful with me cause I'd like to stay that way." Scripture says we are all gods in denial of our power and thus, unable to reach our full potential. Of our arrogance and ignorance there can be no doubt but what makes us of greater value than sparrows? We cannot fly. We seldom sing. I wonder if many know that they even have wings.

Thoreau also wrote, "There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil for every one chopping at the root." And Confucius said, "It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness." Thomas Paine said, "The sun needs no inscription to distinguish him from the darkness." These are all near to the same meaning that if we recognize and proliferate goodness; kindness, mercy, joy, hope, love, faith and beauty...we accomplish more for the common good than by simply posting signs at the pitfalls. But on the other hand promoting good does not always suffice without battling evil...which is why, I suppose, there are so many "Thou shalt nots" in the Bible; because folks don't always do as they know they should, even if they know what they should.
