What For And How Come

What For And How Come

A Poem by Pete

How Come People Say 'How Come'? | Merriam-Webster

when an obese darkness weighs more than it should
when the serpent slithers near
when curses squat and pitch tent on a forked tongue for longer than they have a right
when privacy glass is everywhere
when fertilizer loses hope and is only dung
when a lonely ladder to nowhere is missing a rung

when organ music echoes and lingers in blown windpipes
when waves hello are missing fingers
when a lonely, kosher clarinet is sorry and weeps
as chilly, overcast mornings murder their young
i stand on a cold, perplexing bridge over a mordant, heavy-footed river
occasional white swells that can't get out of their own way colliding with stubborn rocks that don't know where they're from
me, unjustifiably wondering

what for and how come

This doesn't sound terribly uplifting
However, I understand Spring recently sprung
meaning some grass has rize
and some birdies have sung
And if you watch where you step
you might just avoid, steppin in that dung
