Upkeep

Upkeep

A Poem by Pete
"

I awoke into a music which no one about me heard. Whom shall I thank for it? - Thoreau

"
A man is standing kneedeep in water ...

i praise day and huddle night
nothing's wrong if everything's right
we value that which we cling to and keep
darkness doesn't matter as i'm usually asleep
no matter how shallow or deep
regardless of how expensive or cheap
that which we sow, we reap
piling it high in a great big heap

i never learned to cry, i weep
i don't push a broom, i sweep
i don't stare, i peep
time's not a slow crawl, it's a fast creep
doubt crouches as faith takes a giant leap
why does the hill have to be so steep
as i wade through the beads of my life
knee deep

i love all the rhymes in this work. there is a lot of wordplay and the lines roll off the tongue in a most delicate way. yet there is also a sense of brooding here; a dark thread keeps this tapestry together. 'we value that which we cling to and keep'; 'time's not a slow crawl, it's a fast creep' a statement is being made about the human condition. the verse hints at it without delving deep. in this way, this text gives off a chilling vibe. something is lurking in the darkness. what is it? ... we are not told.
