“I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion. For most men, it appears to me, are in a strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, and have somewhat hastily concluded that it is the chief end of man here to "glorify God and enjoy him forever.” - Thoreau

Pete? What does that mean?
Sounds like Thoreau wanted to have the best but not have to do anything for it.
Then justifies that by referring to God.
Isn't that what we all kinda do?
I like "your" poem. Scarf it all now and worry about watering it tomorrow.
I think we all do that, too!
Always intriguing!

Just living is a blessing in itself regardless.
Dear Pete
It seems to me that this might be from the middle ages, not only your words, but the photo as well.... abundance of food being consumed by a group of people; vast amounts of food and drink...unfortunately many people in this country are food insufficient... some starving to death....like the "last supper" they pray that either the government or God will fill their bellies.I believe this might be a spoof on consuming too much food... only eat what you need....that's my read on it!!!
Warmly, B

I love reading, writing, music, nature, God and feeling emotion, not necessarily in that order. To me, these things go hand in hand. My favorite writer is Henry David Thoreau. I think he was a geni.. more..
