If Only in A Sane Dream

If Only in A Sane Dream

A Poem by Pete

Dreams are the touchstones of our characters. - Thoreau

"
A man walks along the edge of a river ...

i walk upon the leathery, old river that once laughed its way through town
hopping from cloud to cloud
drop kicking the hills down
swinging from star to star
stopping to take in the view from the moon
hoping that eternity can't start too soon
my head bumping up against heaven's floor
searching for a living door

i sleep on a sand dune
breathing december in the month of june
with a song in my head, i know i'm not dead
as i give cpr to a golden bassoon
creating a new, miraculous tune
tomorrow night can't come too soon
as my closed eyes eat unmelting ice cream
you know what i mean
if only in a sane dream
