Heaven And Hell

Heaven And Hell

A Poem by Pete
"

To different minds, the same world is a hell, and a heaven. - Ralph Waldo Emerson (Thoreau's mentor)

Heaven and Hell: Four Decades Later - KUTX

way up in heaven
way down in hell
is it hot or cold?
would it matter if you were told?
would you up the ante or lie down and fold?
do they welcome you with a joyous peal or a death knell?
are incense, candles and flesh the only things you smell?
are all the phones cell?"
are all the computers made my dell?
are you allowed to scream, cry and yell?
who collects the coins in the wishing well?
please tell me how to tell

is all the rye bread unleavened?
are the stars, cigarettes, and dice always seven?
are all the people children of mountains or the sea?
does the same person always hold and jingle the same rusty key?
does everyone do everything on bended knee?
does everyone pluck harp or heart strings?
is it crowded with paupers, queens or kings?
what is it that a beggar brings?
what song is it that he sings?
is it a sin to wonder such things?

is anyone there high strung?
does it matter if you die old or young?
is it possible to climb a ladder with a missing rung?
can you bring a friend or can you only enter as one?
does anyone speak with a forked tongue?
if it's hell can you still have fun?
are all the signs in neon?
do all the air conditioners use freon?
is it better to follow napolean or ponce de león?
does anyone here know how to write, type, use a mouse and spell?
is the shaving cream foam of gel?
can you join or form a cartel?
what is this place in which i now dwell?
tell me
how, exactly, do you know if you're in heaven or hell?

Author's Note

Pete
“Whether he sleeps or wakes, whether he runs or walks, whether he uses a microscope or a telescope, or his naked eye, a man never discovers anything, never overtakes anything or leaves anything behind, but himself. Whatever he says or does he merely reports himself. If he is in love, he loves; if he is in heaven, he enjoys, if he is in hell, he suffers. It is his condition that determines his locality.” - Thoreau
