It couldn't happen to meA Story by Pule Leeuw#SouthAfricaRiseI had a friend years ago, a very good friend to me from Zim; Met in Varsity and found jobs and life was amazing; The very 1st Xenophobic attacks happened in 2008. He decided to leave the country and I didn’t understand it. So I asked him, I had to ask him, I had to know why and how he could be so “stupid”. “It’s all over now, why would you leave such a great job and an amazing beginning to your life?, You are alive and nothing bad happened to you. You should stay and continue your life.” He looked at me and said, “well you are correct with all you are saying, but how can I live here when you have killed all my countryman?” “How can I pretend to be happy here when I know you don’t want me here?” We are still friends, he’s a brother to me, and I finally understand what he meant. I finally know him now because I feel his pain, and I know his mind. It couldn’t happen to me but it happened to him. So because it happened to him, it also happened to me. But it couldn’t happen to me… © 2015 Pule Leeuw |
