Rock Around the Clock

Rock Around the Clock

A Poem by Samuel Dickens
"

A brief history

"

Way back in fifty-six, when rock-n-roll was new

We fell in love with Elvis, and Little Richard, too

Bill Haley and his Comets, they played a rockin’ tune

While bedrooms were a shakin’, making baby boom

The British made their entrance in nineteen sixty-four

Causing all that fifties stuff to hide behind the door

Poor ol’ Buddy Holly slept fitful in his grave

While Elvis Aaron Presley’s leg could barely shake

McLean, he told of music, dead and lying cold

But never did imagine what horrors would unfold

Ten million shaking booties and disco glitter-balls

Along with John Travolta--they nearly killed us all

Dire Straits and Skynard, they came to fill the void

Along with AC/DC, Stevie Ray and Floyd

Rock-n-roll, it lives, continuing for years

A testament to quality, like pizza and cold beer

I found this one hiding in some old files. Had to tweak it a bit, and here it is. My oldest sister turned me onto Rock when I was a wee lad. I can't seem to post pictures off the internet anymore, so the photo is of her. I swear she remained a rock n roll teenie-bopper her whole life.

The old stuff, Elvis and Little Richard, has withstood the test of time. Nothing can match the energy and enthusiasm of the birth of rock n roll. I wish I could have been there for Elvis' first appearance on national television. What a time to be alive. And you survived the Bee Gees, a testament to your hardihood. Thank you for this tour of rock n roll history.

Thank you.
Yup! I reckon that when every generation loses their youth the hold onto the music of their youth and complain about all that new stuff just being a noise.
Even people of the 80's, of which I am sadly one hold onto that music too, which has always baffled me because for the most part it was truly awful.
The only group that is truly correct is the teens of late fifties and sixties. They saw rock n roll be born and expand in so many new directions. They truly did have it all.
I doubt millennial will be listening to Taylor Swift into ther dotage, but stranger things have happened.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've gotta go shake it to the left left, then shake it to the right! 😃

Thank you. Shake it but don't break it!
I hear you brother .... 50s and 60s were the best .. just as our kids say the same ... a sad refrain but not ... I think it's just time rolling on and on and on again ... all good Mr. Sam :)
