You Asked

You asked, who are you?
A question I’ve been contemplating lately.
Often the answer alludes me
as the tin man inside
looks for a heart
and sees only the emptiness
I didn’t want to find.
~~~
Sometimes I wonder
what is this smoke and ashes existence
and why do I feel
this cold wind rush through me,
steal my words,
my resistance of pain,
allowing this river wash over me
removing these memories of you,
your touch
and warm embrace.
~~~
You asked, who are you?
I no longer know.

i used to be loving and kind and compassionate - i was a good person, once, but now life's meaning eludes me - what is all these love for and about - the silence won't even give away - and i feel so lost and empty - this is what the poem spoke to me about - thank you, my friend, for sharing :)

best,
steph

We can feel like this from time to time. Lost and suddenly unsure of who we are. Well done. Question, is the use of alludes intentional, or did you mean to say eludes?

I know, it's one of your "endearing" qualities..
The deep introspection in this write hit me, Curt. We change with time and sometimes the changes surprise even us.....but you know what? That cold wind might just be Old Man Winter in the Big Apple. I think you are still the same Curt I knew years ago. Your heart is still just as big and just as loving. Don't doubt that. Remember one thing....pain changes everything. I will not say this is a "nice" one, Curt....but it is a powerful one for sure. Lydi**

you write so many pieces i can perfectly relate to...i used to be the big heart---acceptance, trust---and now i often wonder who this is inside this body...because the mind and heart seem to have grown cynical...and there is too much doubt...it's life i guess...we grow up, grow old and grow somewhat skeptical...even though we don't want to..
