Reflective Free Verse on Writing

Sometimes, I reread my 

earlier poems

either because I have 

just found them after I had 

forgotten them

or just because,

and it's been a while.

Sometimes, it makes 

me want to throw up,

half because 

I was young 

and they were terrible,

and half because 

I could feel my emotions 

digging and crawling 

their way out of the grave 

I buried them in.

The raw emotions 

that we have 

and the ability to write about them,

the memories that feel 

like they just happened 

yesterday.

I am so glad I wrote 

what I did

when I did.

To relive the pain 

in the words 

I've written 

reminds me that 

I survived it.

Writing.

Art.

What a beautiful gift we give

not only to others

but to ourselves.
