Your poetry is 100% you talking about you, and what matters to you, in prosaic language. But no one comes to poetry to learn irrelevant details about strangers. Did you wake this morning wanting to know what I had for breakfast? Of course not. So...how many people here woke wondering what's in your bedroom?

People come to poetry to be entertained, not informed. They want you to make them feel and care. They seek things THEY will find interesting.

If you take the time to learn it, poets have a superpower. By choice and placement of words they can make someone they will never meet feel the emotions THEY choose. You can make someone laugh, cry, or cheer. But how many cheer a list of laziness?

Read poetry to learn its power. Dig into the skills that have been developed over centuries, to save you the trouble of fumbling and falling into the traps awaiting those who turn to writing unprepared.

A book like Mary Oliver's, A Poetry Handbook, is a treasure, filled with gems of unexpected knowledge.

The excerpt from Stephen Fry's, The Ode Less Traveled, on Amazon, is amazing for what it has to say about the flow of language.

Poetry is so much more than the author talking about things meaningful to them. So jump in. You'll be glad you did.
