Attitude Adjustments

A Poem by rubie
"

One of the best ways to overcome writer's block is to actually write about it!

"

I’ve written my way

out of writer’s block

in the past

fellow poets

prodding me

to keep pen on paper

for ten solid minutes

spewing all I know

about mashed potatoes

or games chalked

on the macadam

of my youth

or my memories of the counterculture

and moments later

write for ten minutes more

about my past lovers

and then everything

I remember about

my grandmother’s hands

my funk dissipates by discipline

the hours fly by

measuring words

fine tuning images

and dancing to the rhythms

of lyrical symmetry

I can relate to your words in this one so well! When the words do not seem to cooperate, I just write them all down....seemingly disconnected words, but somehow they eventually gel into a poem. "Dancing to the rhythms of lyrical symmetry" what a lovely line. I enjoyed this. Lydi**

No doubt that every poet can relate. Sometimes, the words don't make sense while they're dancing ar.. read more
lots to be said about mashed potatoes...and once we spew enough about them and get past the writers block, the rest is gravy!

i like "funk dissipates by discipline"---
that has a certain symmetry in its dance.
