the day i grew my wings

the day i grew my wings

A Poem by Matthew L. Arcelay
"

written as pace rhodes

"

colorful is the day i read you like a book
that day they read me too
believed in my soul as i believed in your promise
but that trinket's broken just like your words
absurd as it may be i'm not in tears for you
even though i cheered for you in everything you'd do
did you know i grew wings that day
on them were written hidden scriptures
reaffirmations of time
instructions on how to put back together me
so i did
looked in the mirror and
found somebody who would love me for me
i bought myself a smile because i'm worth it
and for awhile i forgot that
i was lost in your shadow breathless
now it's you who's lost in my rear view mirror
trying to count the feathers i left behind
that day i grew my wings
