What is the true meaning and use of words

what is the actual definition of words?  Why do people get so upset at the fact that they got called a certain word?  Makes me think why people get so uptight, and why others call them names.  We all, people, are not perfect, and who is to decide that certain people are such nasty names.  I never really figured it out.  I always saw it as similar to the popular saying, "I am rubber you are glue..." and I just kept out the glue part.  Thought of myself as rubber cuz words don't bother me.  I know who I am, and don't need anyone else saying what I should be.  It's just ridiculous, when people make up names to call people.  It's like an unwritten rule or law saying that we are able to do such things.
