Chapter XXXV: See You Later!

“Is everyone ready?” Serge asks the crew. They all nod and agree. “All right, everyone get on board!” The 120 people board the ship. “Any last words?”

“Nope, just, see you later, I guess.” Ballester says.

“Good luck out there, I sincerely mean it.”

“Thanks, boss.” Ballester and Gorgax are the last ones to board. They immediately head to the bridge.

“Captains on the bridge!” Oigres shouts. Everyone stands at attention.

“At ease.” Ballester says. “I had enough of that s**t in the Marines, and she had enough of that s**t as military commander, right babe?”

“Yeah, but it still feels good to be respected, at ease.” Everyone takes their station.

“All right, take a good last look, ladies and gentlemen. This is the last time we’ll be on Terra Firma for awhile. Blast off!” Ballester and Gorgax simultaneously turn their keys and it turns the ship on. They start to lift off, and are shortly above the planet in space. “Take a last look at the planet, who knows when we’ll see her again.” Gorgax rolls her eyes. “What was that for?”

“You humans are so sentimental about your planet.”

“Unlike Galaxians, we’ve never had to leave ours behind before.”

“I’m sorry, I guess I don’t understand, considering I spent my entire life until we landed on your planet on a ship.”

“Do you wanna drive?”

“Considering it’s your first time flying a ship, I think the honor should be yours.”

“Thanks, babe.” They kiss.

“Off to a good start, I hope?” Serge’s voice comes through a speaker.

“Yes sir.”

“Again, good luck, contact me when you drop your first beacon past Pluto.”

“Yes sir.”

“Serge out.” They all stare out the window as Earth gets smaller and smaller.

“Coming up on Mars.” Ballester says. “Everyone wave at the rover! Not like it can see us...well, maybe it can.” Everyone waves anyway. “Oh f**k, the asteroid field. Babe, do you mind?”

“Don’t feel confident enough?” Gorgax teases.

“It’s my first time flying, and that asteroid belt is pretty dense.”

“Fine, I’ll take the controls.”

“Oh babe?”

“Yes?”

“Don’t forget the course correction, we don’t want to get sucked in by Jupiter’s gravity.”

“Oh, so now you’re backseat flying?”

“You’re right, sorry babe.”

“We’ve flown by Jupiter and Saturn enough that I know what I'm doing.”

“Alright! Sorry, damn!”

“They are pretty, aren’t they?”

“What?”

“The gas giants.”

“Yeah, Jupiter’s storm looks pretty intense. I wonder what it’s like in there?”

“It would tear us to shreds in seconds.”

“Yeah, but still, it’s so beautiful.”

“Huh. You humans are peculiar.”

“Why? Because we find planets so damn interesting?”

“Yeah. But I think I get it though, we’re used to seeing other planets, other galaxies, the closest you humans have come is going to your moon.”

“Exactly, we’ve only seen pictures through a telescope, we’re actually the first humans to make it out this far. And look, even the kids are mesmerized.”

“I must admit dad, I understand your awe.” Oigres says.

“See? You’ve spent your whole life in space, it’s nothing special to you. Wow, Saturn’s rings are spinning pretty fast!”

“If it had a surface, the rings would look slower.”

“How do you know that?”

“I took extra science classes dad, I knew I’d be the science officer, I’m Serge’s protégé after all.”

“Oh yeah, I forgot sometimes how much of a brainiac you are.”

“Does that disappoint you?”

“Not at all, son, I’ve told you this before.”

“Uranus always freaks me out, since it’s all sideways.”

“It is! That IS freaky. It looks like a greenish, sideways Saturn.”

“It’s the only planet in our solar system that does that.”

“Weird!”

“Once we pass Neptune, we’ll be entering the Dwarf Planet system, so get ready to drop that beacon, Arizona!”

“Yes, sir!” Arizona says.

“Alright, there’s Neptune, so pretty and blue! Arizona, I apologize for my awe since you can’t see what we’re seeing.”

“That’s ok sir, your descriptions make me feel included.”

I’m glad you feel that way. Coming up on Pluto...now! Drop the beacon!”

“Yes sir!” Arizona says, as she pulls a lever, which drops a beacon outside of the ship.

“Establish contact with Earth.”

“Establishing contact.”

“Hey guys!” Serge says over the monitor.

“Hey boss.” Ballester says.

“Two days to Pluto, sounds like it could be a movie title.”

“Wow, we must be booking, because honestly it only felt like, what would you guys say, 12 hours?”

“Give or take.” Gorgax says.

“Enjoying the sights?” Serge asks.

“Yeah, it’s nice out here, although there’s a lot of emptiness in between.” Ballester says.

That’s why it’s called ‘space’ and not ‘full’ hahahahaha.”

“Hilarious, boss.” Gorgax says, sarcastically.

“Alright, so after you guys pass the dwarf planets, there’s going to be a lot of empty space before you get to your first planet before Galaxia, now known as S**t Planet. Sorry, Galaxians.”

“It’s ok, our ancestors ruined the planet, nothing to apologize for.”

“Anyway, according to the Galaxiansit’s uninhabited, which is why they never stopped there. However, their data is five hundred years old, so it’s possible there’s life there. I want you guys to check it out.”

“Does the planet have a name?” Ballester asks.

“According to the star chart, it’s named NG-566.”

“That’s a s****y name.”

“Well, for now, we’re just going to go with that name. It’s a lone planet in a system between ours and theirs.”

“Does it at least have a moon?”

“Nope. And it’s unknown whether it has an atmosphere, so suit up when you go down.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Alright, call me after you’re done exploring, let me know what you find.”

“Yes sir!” Ballester and Gorgax say together.

“Serge out.” He cuts off communication.

“Wow, look at how tiny those dwarf planets are.” Ballester says.

“They look like floating rocks, not very attractive.” Oigres says.

“No wonder we didn’t learn about them in school.” Ballester says.

“We’re reaching the end of the line, hon.” Gorgax says. “Do you wanna take us the rest of the way to NG-566?”

“Sure, as long as there’s no more asteroid belts along the way.”

“P***y.”

“Babe, not in front of the crew.”

“Oops, I forgot. Come on, let’s go to bed.”

I’m with you, just let me set the coordinates and set it on autopilot. Everyone else can go to bed too, pick one of your staff to take your place on the bridge.

Oigres, you get first night shift, you can split it with ManboutuManboutu, get your rest now.”

“Yes sir!” They both say. Ballester and Gorgax head to their room.

“What a first day, huh? I finally got to see our solar system up close, it was wild!” Ballester says.

“I wish I could share your enthusiasm, but I’ve been through your neighborhood a few times.” Gorgax says.

“Is there any system you haven’t been through?”

“Oh, plenty, we only followed our route, which bypasses lots of systems we’ve never entered.”

“Well, I hope when we discover new planets and stuff, you’ll be more impressed than you are now.”

“I do share the same kind of wonder and awe you do, but it loses it’s charm the fifth time through, ya know?”

“I guess. If I visited a national park or monument every year, it starts to lose its charm.”

“Exactly. I am excited to see what’s undiscovered, at least for our people.”

“By our, you mean...?”

“Humans and Galaxians alike.”

“Ok, wanna have sex before bed?”

“I’ve been waiting for you to ask, let’s go!” Meanwhile, back on the bridge, Oigres is hanging out with the night crew.

“Thank Scorpious this is a rotating job, I’m getting tired just watching all this empty blackness- wait, what’s that?” Oigres says.

“What, sir?” the officer asks.

“That bright light up ahead.”

“That is the upcoming sun for the solar system we are supposed to arrive at.”

“Estimated time?”

“10 hours.”

“Alright, let me just adjust the course correction so we don’t get sucked into the sun’s gravity. How long since my parents went to bed?”

“Five and a half hours, sir.”

“Good, Manboutu will take over soon, I’m getting pretty tired.”
