Prologue

The year was 1979, around springtime- and the alarm clock radio blasts ‘Cars’ by Gary Numan.  Serge just finished waking up and his first thought was to play hooky. Graduation practice had just started, so it would be a good opportunity to sneak off a day from grammar school. The day was cold, damp, and gray and he set out for a little adventure. He would have to go somewhere beyond the sights of the truant officer, so he decided to go to the cemetery.

This old graveyard was hidden behind a crematory and a wooded area. As he entered the woods, it started to rain, so he went for cover. He saw The Projects, so he headed for them, but wound up in the cemetery. There was a structure with two pillars and a roof on which the word ‘Schrieber’ were written. He sat down on a marble bench that was inside the enclosure and contemplated while the rain got heavier. The day got extremely gloomy as thunder cracked in the sky. The song ‘Black Sabbath’ was playing through his mind. Suddenly, he hears the fainting echo of far away voices. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw what looked like a struggle between two people. Curious, he got up and walked toward the direction of the voices.

He was surrounded by woods and he saw two trees with connecting branches like a corridor in between with nothing inside. He put his hand inside and felt a sheet of cool water. He pulled it out and noticed it wasn’t wet. Suddenly, a voice said, “Come.”

Serge responded, “No, you come.”

The voice said, “I cannot pass.”

Serge thought to himself, “Ah, what the hell!” He walked through the sheet of cool water and found himself floating, as if in space. He noticed there was nothing around him. He felt like he was in a colorless void. He put his hand in front of him and noticed there was nothing there. He was totally invisible inside the void. He looked back and saw his body frozen in suspended animation. “Am I in heaven?” Serge asked himself.

“Not quite.” said the Voice. “This is an interdimensional doorway between the third and fourth dimensions.”

“How do I understand what you’re saying?” Serge wondered.

“In here we speak a universal language.” The Voice answered.

“You can read my mind also?”

The Voice replied, “Your voice and your mind are one. You have been chosen to complete a task of which you will be told in time.”

Serge retorted, “Wait a minute. What about my body out there? Isn’t it going to rot out there without me being inside it?”

The Voice assured me by telling me that everything was happening in a fraction of a second. For less than a wink of an eye, I would be back inside my body. The voice also said that it would have to share my body.

Serge asks, “Why me? Why have I been chosen?”

“Because of this ritual that is being done to this creature called TMR-714.”

“What is this ritual?” Serge asks curiously.

The Voice replied, “In due time, you will learn. The time is up.” Suddenly, when I looked again, I was back in the woods. When I turned around, I saw two trees with the woods behind them and I walked between the trees in astonishment.

I thought to myself, “Nah, it couldn’t have happened.”
