The 'trophy child'
Children live in a magical and mystical world of their own which is alien to adults for they can vaguely recollect this important time in their own lives. Grown-ups ten to lose their distinctive connection to nature and fantasy with age. In the modern competitive times of today;one observes many a parent putting enormous pressure on their children to excel in everything they do,particularly studies. Though driven by the noble parental desire to want the best for their offspring, they exert a great pressure on the kids to be the best at everything, ranging from sports to studies.A child must always get the highest marks and emerge as the winner.She/he cannot lose. Every child must be star child, someone parents can boast about to others and display as a 'trophy child'. However, the reality is quite different as every child is going to fail, sometimes or the others,at something or the other, which is a natural phenomenon. The point is that they are not mature enough to handle this failure well and will have a harder time dealing with it than adults.Few come out of this experience with no emotional and mental bruises;many go through a turbulent time that can have long-lasting effects. To make the matter worse, sometimes,a parents's adverse reaction to their child's inability to emerge as a winner can ruin his/her personality. It seems as if childhood has been hijacked by adults who are desperate to accomplish their own unfulfilled dreams through their offspring. Sometimes the sense of failure in their own lives can make parents push their children too hard, feeling that childhood is too precious a time to be left to children alone. They feel the need to take charge, push ,polish and protect children through this important time that crafts the future course. "The pressure is basically a social and cultural one.The second your children go to reflects your social standing and the university a young person attends will have a great part to play in getting him a job.say a parent. © 2025 Marium Usman |
