Shadow KinA Poem by Shayla SayerThe ceiling closes in A child will die tonight Stripped from the innocence A soul, forever tarnished Remains, bearing testament To a war that was lost. Why did the shadows Allow a survivor? Unwarranted slaughter Is their rally and battle cry… Why leave one life to be lived…? They do so For to some victims of battle Death is a gift A mercy And the shadows don’t believe In mercy. The greatest pain they can cause To this prisoner Is to release her And snicker in the background As she attempts to relearn How to live in this world… And fails. Killing her would provide Entertainment for the moment But her prolonged suffering Offers so much more. She attempts to end it When she musters up enough strength… But she cannot For while she blocks out The memories of her imprisonment The shadows raped her Before they released her They took turns at leaving behind Their seed of darkness And now within her grows a child A child with an infernal hunger She can feel the evil inside her… A child will die tonight As one of her flesh Is nourished by her corpse An infant with ageless eyes Who will return to its shadow kin. © 2011 Shayla SayerReviews
