The falling leaves look like drifting snow,
and as I look into the winter without you,
I wonder how you're doing,
I wonder what you're doing without me.
The morning sun is slanting through the trees,
and I wonder which particular beam
is illuminating you, as you sleep,
curled like one of Spring's unfurling leaves
on your bed.
The days are like falling leaves,
bitter and brittle, and so I am--
ready to crumble at the first strike.
The hours drift by like falling leaves,
like the leaves you brushed from your hair.
You left me lying on the ground,
cold and alone, as empty as the hand
that held yours, moments before.
You left me lying there for hours
to break into pieces in peace.
The days are icy and lonely,
and they remind me of how it isn't,
so I remember the summer,
and how I memorized every curve of your body.
I miss the moments
when you let your guard down.
I miss the moments when
your serious eyes would lighten,
when I took you by surprise,
when you would smile, laugh,
throw your arms around me.
I miss those carefree moments,
as I drove you anywhere you wanted to go,
where you'd throw your head back
and sing your freedom song.
But summer's long gone.
If there was ever a war for my heart,
you won, because I was always yours.
