Chapter One - Part One

I'd never felt this way before. It was almost as if I was riding a roller coaster. Going up, going down, all the twists and turns making my head ache. It shouldn't have happened. I shouldn't have done what I did. There's no easy way to say it, and it's not something that can be told without telling the whole story. So here I begin.

I met Andrea on the job. I was the most popular waitress in the small coffee shop I worked in. I don't know why, I never thought of myself as a particularly attractive person, but the customers seemed to love me.

Andrea walked in on a Tuesday. She sat at one of the tables I was working and I walked over confidently to ask her what she was ordering today.

"Just a chocolate thick shake please."

I couldn't help but stare at her; she was beautiful. Not in a conventional way, but in that quirky way that you can't help but admire. There were two things that I noticed about her as soon as we were close. One, her eyes reminded me of melted chocolate. Two, she smelt like a cinnamon donut.

"What size? Small, regular or large?"

"I'll take small."

"Alright, it'll be ready for you soon."

I swear she winked at me as I walked away. Robbie, my friend and fellow waiter, grinned at me as I went back into the kitchen. He was too perceptive for his own good sometimes.

"Did you flirt with her?"

"Oh come on, she's just another customer."

"Really? I could read your body language from here. Just go for it, Evelyn. There's nothing to be afraid of."

I shot him a dirty look. I didn't have much time to think about what I was going to do with his advice because a moment later her thick shake was ready. We were a small coffee shop, so we never had too many orders going at once. It was a pretty relaxed place.

I hurried back over to her table. She was writing in a notebook and smiled at me as I put the thick shake down.

"Thank you. So, are you going to ask me on a date or do I have to ask you?"

Shocked, my mouth must have been blabbering for about twenty seconds before I actually said anything. "Would you like to go out sometime?" I asked.

"I'd love to. Here's my number," she said. She tore out the page she'd been writing on and handed it to me. I read the name on it - Andrea. "Call me," she said. "Oh, and I'd actually love some French toast, maybe with maple syrup and ice-cream."

"Sure," I replied.

To be continued...
