Loyal to the lightning

Loyal to the lightning

A Poem by Skylar Lighten

Oh the birds
They stay
Refusing to fly away
Loyal to the storm
And the electric wires
And I do the same
Sitting in your thunder
Feeling the pain of a hundred wires

Still I perch,
on this shaking line,
though the wind bites,
and the rain makes it hard to see you.

You crack like lightning,
loud and sudden
but I don’t flinch.

I’ve learned the rhythm of your thunder.

I stay,
not 'cause I don't know the sky is wide,
but 'cause my heart found home
in the chaos of your weather.

Others fly when clouds turn dark
but I’ve got wings made for the storm.
I was built to love you
even when it hurts.

Even when the silence after the crash
feels heavier than the noise.
