Trapped

Trapped

A Poem by Soren

Prisoner in the present
steps on a treadmill floor
a wall to our front and back
Trapped in a room with no door

The floor may move fast or slow
but only in one direction
outside dreams grow
with little intellection

you capture the human condition in this irksome metaphor. we are prisoners: alone; constantly forced to move, although not at a pace of our choosing; and there is no escape but death. but perhaps like Camus' Sisyphus, we might be able to find purpose or even joy in our punishment? that is the only freedom we have; that we have the power to control how we think about the situation, and even if we cannot change anything else, maybe there is a victory in that.

The current world situation does seem like a treadmill. No matter how much we preach and negotiate, things don't seem to change. Maybe I'm just old and bitter.

Not sure where to begin, dear Soren. The first verse seems to me to be about the restrictions which time brings as we age, while the second verse is evocative of someone who suffers from vertigo. Can't wait to read the true meaning of this amazing metaphoric gem! Thank you for sharing. Lovely work!
