Thief, priest and engineer

Thief, priest and engineer

A Poem by Soren

So I'm told in times of old crowds came to watch thieves on a rope dance
With the industrial revolution came a new solution, invented in France
The guillotine a substitution,  new means of execution, the people did rejoice
To face up or down by the order of he crown, the victim had a choice

With the king's order to comply, were three to die, engineer, thief and a priest
Thief not wanting to see the collision made his decision on all fours like a beast
Blade on its way, to the people's dismay, it stopped in mid fall
The law declared with this the victim was to be spared, to the crowd's appall

The priest, face down said he, to look at God's face I'm not worthy, the blade stopped half way
The grateful priest was released and promptly crossed himself and ran away
Then engineer said I have no fear, eye to the sky, I will face God unlike the priest
Before the blade was released the engineer said your problem has ceased, this track has to be greased

Soren, I adore this... darkly comic, perfectly timed, and sharp as the blade itself. You’ve turned grim history into clever theater. The rhythm almost feels like a ballad someone would whisper in a candlelit pub.

Funnily enough, I relate most to the engineer. That's my spirit animal. The kind of person who, faced with imminent doom, can’t resist pointing out the technical issue before meeting their fate. I’d probably do the same...correct the design flaw, then politely perish for efficiency’s sake.

It’s delightfully ironic how curiosity and competence can become their own executioners. You’ve captured that with wit and precision. A wickedly funny and insightful poem....an absolute treat to read.

Hi Soren.
This poem reads like a fable disguised as history, a meditation on how we face the inevitable.

The thief survives through fear, the priest through humility, and the engineer falls to his own intellect..each one revealing a different truth about human nature.

I love how the irony builds so subtly: the very mind that could “fix” the machine ends up breaking the fragile boundary between miracle and mechanism.

Beneath its dark humor, there’s a quiet warning..perhaps some mysteries are meant to remain unsolved.
