The Mountain

The Mountain

A Poem by Steve Paschall

Some say that climbing the mountain

Is a metaphor for life;

That you must meet its challenges

And come out on the other side.

Well, I don't know about all that

I like the river and the trees;

I like the smell of woodsmoke

The quiet and the peace.

I like thinking that I'm out of time

And the past is all behind me;

And that if I don't want 'em to

No one can ever find me.

I like to see my dog run free

I like to scream at the top of my lungs;

Without the world looking down on me

As if I were the one who was dumb.

So I took this metaphor

And made it something real;

The mountain isn't in your mind

It's something you can feel.
