Mephistopheles' Tenure

Mephistopheles' Tenure

A Poem by OtherWorldWoman

Metallic Scrapes from the Depths of Hell

Does a soul rot away

set too long in abyss?

Sleeping, half-awake

In the deepest waters

of a never-ending well...

Did we creatures live once?

Or were we always here?

My mind tells me memories

I'd like not to hear

My lips committed murder

Tearing flesh from bone

My eyes committed theivery

feasting upon skin, and skin alone

What is this madness you tell to me

of these thinkings I thought not known

Was there truly life aside from this

before death's cold kiss

his send-off to this sour sleep

In payment for the deeds

That I now reap...?

How long has it been

since reason and meaning?

Unwavering...

Buried alive in pocketed air

No tangible rope, no soul-freeing stair

Loose these chains that bury me so deep

I no longer wish to sleep

Buried deep beneath the earth...

Away from laughter and joy and love

I yearn to live and breathe above!

Oh, hellmaster--

Won't you see to my concerns?

My murderous deeds I have learned...

Loose these chains

And set me free

Let me escape with sanity!
