[untitled]A Chapter by Stephanie JonesI’d been imagining I was in a forest. The prettiest one ever. It was snowing out, I loved the snow. I was laying down in it with my eyes shut. The snow was falling all around me, and I never wanted to leave. But something told me I should. And I got up and started heading into the dark scary forest. I’d never gone into there before, the dark woods was prohibited in my land. Suddenly I started running, fearing fate and the future. I finally was out of the forest and I slowed my pace down before crashing against the warm ground. It was sunny here, nice, relaxing. Slowly my land started fating, time was up. I had to go be real now. ----
I couldn’t imagine an hour and thirty minutes flying by so fast. I opened my eyes, and slowly moved my head towards the man. He was still at the desk, looking over at me. I wonder what he had tried to ask me within the last two hours, seeing as I didn’t pay any attention to him. I looked to the clock that read 3:59, one minute and I’d be free. I watched as the seconds ticked by, then slowly started a countdown from 30 seconds, and before I knew it, I was counting 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and then it was four o clock. I jumped out of my seat and before looking back at him headed towards the door before walking out. I didn’t look at anyone as I made my way back to my room.
But where was my room? I didn’t know. We’d walked through so many doors.
I just kept walking, I passed by some rooms where girls were talking and I even passed the cafeteria where people were…eating. I passed by a couple more doors, and still had no clue.
“Hey.” Someone said from behind me, but I took a long guess that it wasn’t for me so I kept going. “Hey, wait, you, where are you going? Hold on!!” Finally I turned around. She was looking back at me and smiling. She jogged over to me with a smile on her face. I was still frowning. “Hey, you must be Harmony if I’m right? You are the new girl.” I simply nodded. “Do you need help or something? You look a little down.” I nodded no and started walking away. “Well, if you need anyone I’m here.” She shouted to me, and I just kept walking. I reached another door leading to somewhere else opened it and listened to it shut behind me.
I looked at the open area I was in. It was like a library, it had thousands of books, computers, and really everything. There were some girls off to the side looking at a book, some giggling and checking out guys. A lot of guys worked here I noticed, and all of them were cute.
So far, I had a lot of pros to being here.
Cute guys.
Being far from home.
Not being asked what is wrong, just everyone knowing.
And everyone was thin, so nobody said ‘you’re so skinny’ or ‘put some meat on those bones’. Everyone just, understood.
I heard the girls giggle again and when I looked at them they were all staring and blushing at a guy who had just passed by. I wondered who was so cute. I pretended to go look for a book in the non-fiction section, the closest to the girls, and the guy that just passed by.
Why did I even care? It isn’t like I’d blush or go over to them and start admiring him with them. But I kept looking anyways. When I looked through the books there was only one guy there. Dr. Lutz? And as if I said his name a loud he turned around looking towards the books. I hid myself, and slowly darted away.
Soon enough I was at the door on the other side, I was so close I could feel freedom. I even sped up a bit.
“Harmony?” Someone said. Scrap that_not someone, just him. And as if I was being forced my body came to a halt.
I listened as the steps got closer, then looked down to see the feet next to mine. I turned my gaze towards his face, and watched his lips turn up into a smile.
“Jeez, you sure know how to dart out things. I was wondering why you were looking at the clock, but I didn’t realize you were waiting till exactly four to leave. Sometimes I let the sessions go a few minutes longer so we could finish up.” That made my forehead crinkle. We were doing NOTHING. Why waste more of my time if we had nothing to do to begin with.
I kept looking at him with the same facial expressions, staring him right and the eyes. And he was looking back into mine. I wondered if he could see me, the girl inside this body. The sad one who always cries, but stays so strong on the outside. The one who hardly knew left from right, or thought breathing was something you needed to concentrate on to keep doing.
Then I looked into my peripheral vision to see his lips moving again. But I didn’t hear anything. Wow, I really was out of it today. I shook my head and snapped back to reality, and he looked at me strange before repeating what ever he just said. “Like I said, do you know where your room is?” Ah, he must have just thought I was lost. I nodded my head no. “Well, then I guess I’ll have to show you.” He smiled showing his teeth before putting his arm around me and leading me out the door.
Once again we walked through numerous doors. But I listened as he told me how to get to my room. In fact, getting there was probably the easiest thing ever, if you were paying attention. When we got to my room, I opened the door and looked over at him. “See you later.” And he slowly started shutting the door. I walked over to my bed and got into the same position as I was in his office, just looking straight ahead. “Oh and Harmony,” he said, I didn’t look up. “Would you like to go outside later after you eat. I saw you earlier looking out the windows, maybe you’d like some air?” Once again I stayed silent. I couldn’t help it. “Okay, well, uh, we can talk about this later, goodbye Harm.” Finally I heard the door shut.
I layed down on my bed and closed my eyes trying to remain breathing. My stomach growled once then twice, before shutting up. I looked at the clock, and it read 6:30. How long was I down for? Dinner was at 7, and I was not excited for that. To eat? I hadn’t done so in about three weeks.
Someone is probably yelling, ‘go eat a cheeseburger!’ but truth be told, my body has gone around twenty eight days without food on usually routine basis. I just got used to not eating.
Suddenly there was a knock, knock at my door. I didn’t say anything, and someone knocked again. I just stayed silent. I started to see the door handle moving and moved my eyes up to the ceiling. Slowly the doors open and I made out the figure of a guy. Or course, dinner time.
“Hey there Harm, I was worried you had left your room.” He laughed to himself. Was that to be a joke? That I never move much, or that he was surprised I hadn’t darted to hide somewhere?
I could tell he was waiting for a response, but I didn’t have one to give. I kept frowning at the ceiling. I knew he’d break the silence. “Hey, well, it is dinner time, so come on, let’s go get some food into you. You have to be hungry.”
How would he know anything. I felt like screaming at him! Wripping him apart with my words, making him cry, wishing he’d never existed. I had that affect on people. If I wanted someone to cry, I’d make it happen. “Come on Harm.”
First thing is first. As soon as I was able to speak again, I’d tell him to quit it with that name. It is Harmony, not Harm. And I will harm him if he keeps it up.
