Dangerous life.A Chapter by Stephanie JonesI was right of course, that my little sister was in there. She was laying down in the corner of the giant nursery in her little carriage. She was awake, but she looked scared. I ran through the door and as soon as she saw me, whatever was on her mind disapeered, she made arm motions with her hands, calling to me, telling me she needed me. I grabbed her out of her carriage and put her carriage in my other hand. I then told her she had to behave for the next couple of minutes, and she ducked her head under her arms. With that, I went through the door to the nursery, and began running to the staircase. I started hearing a few shouts. I slid down the staircase, like how people do in the movies. And it really worked, I got down the stairs and went flying out the door. I just kept running while sliding Lexi back into her carriage. It was hot out, again, and I didn’t care. I heard some shouts from behind me, but I could have cared less, I kept running and didn’t look back. Finally we made it to a small children’s park. With the fact I felt safer here, we stopped. I took and threw our bags onto a nearby bench, and took Lexi out of her cradle. “Hey Lexi, sweetie, it’s a nice day out so we are going to stay in this little park here...what do you want to do.” I tried making her feel reassured that we were safe for now, tonight would be a different story...and with that she pointed to the swings. She must have wanted to play on the swings for hours. And what made it worse was that I had no care for it. I simply had to please my little sister, for I wanted her to be loved. It scared me though as I silently pushed her on the swings, what would we do. I feared for our lives, and we had nowhere to go. I looked up at the sky...and saw it was starting to get dark, I feared this. I was afraid, and had no idea what we would do. So I decided it was time to go. “Lexi, we have to go now, it is starting to get late.” I said to her with a calm voice. She looked at me with a million questions in her eyes, but understood. She let me lift her up and out and I placed her in her carriage. I decided it might be smart to feed her. And as soon as I started thinking about food and how long it had been since I ate a growl rippled through my stomach so loudly it actually frightened me a little. I took out the little map that I had grabbed from the train station. The map was very easy to read. It said in big letters, welcome to Selma, Alabama. It showed in a pretty clear detail of the entire city. It showed the hospital I was in, and in a little circle I recognized the swing sets, and slides making up the little detailing of this park. I also recognized the little beach we were at today. Which technically wasn’t a beach at all, just a sandy area off the river. But at that very moment I decided even though it might be stupid, that was where we had to go. It would be safe, as long as I stay away from the rocks. Then I remembered what happened. The cut, the blood, the screams, the hospital, and realized a had a long day. I even felt the back of my head to see the stitches, but there were none, just a really big bandage. I must have not gotten as badly cut up as everyone thought. Then, I heard sirens. They were somewhat off in the distance, and I was afraid that they might be after me. So I ran through the woods instead of being smart and using back roads. But I followed a pretty straight route and knew that, even though I had no idea where I was going sooner or later, I would get out of here. But it started to get dark...and I had no light...
The next thing I knew was that everything kept getting harder to see. The sun obviously was setting, and when you are in a forest covered in trees light is already limited. What made it worse was that slowly I was getting wet. And it wasn’t even raining, and this of course sucked. Dare me to say it, but my good luck of getting out of my house ended me up in a dark, wet forest. I put a blanket over Lexi who was literally snoring in carriage. Then I decided before I keep going I might as well look around for some shelter. The first thing I noticed was that the grass was green. Silly, I know, but when you are living off the fact that you have no idea where you are or what you are going to do, you notice the small things. I also noticed looking backwards, that there were a lot of trees. And most of them were really tall, but some were short. Then I took a deep breath trying to clear my mind. But the scent that filled it was almost unbearable. “Pine trees.” I said slightly as the words chocked out of me. I hated the smell of them..and now I’m in a forest filled with them. Then, I realized how hopeless I was. The trail looked like it could go on forever, and I began to give up. I was going to die out here, with my little sister. And then it came to me, so fast it almost hurt. Like a big slap to the face on how I couldn’t have noticed it before. I threw down my bags and my little sister sleeping in her carriage and started climbing. It took me awhile because well, I had never climbed a tree before, but I was determined. For if as the saying goes everything happens for a reason…this idea was to show that it’s true. And then I reached it. I found the perfect branch, and dared to look below, I was up high, higher than I ever thought I could go. But the moment was almost magical. I started to cry, for this, this took my breath away, and wasn’t prepared on giving it back to me. It was, my dream. The sky was in fact that pinkish purple I saw...the sun was just setting, the breeze, the smell...everything was real. But like in my dream I realized oh, too soon what was going to happen. In my dream everything went black, right now, I was climbing down the trees at the speed of light. I started to get lower and lower until I started to hear my sister snore...it even made me giggle. To the fact my little baby sister was snoring. I slumped the bags up on my shoulders as I must have already done a thousand times and grabbed my sister in her carriage and started running. I was running past trees, with no light, and I kept tripping, and I fell...twice. But I knew what I had to do. I picked up the pace it was getting late, later than before, and there was no sun. And then I saw it, a little fire. And I started running faster toward the fire, and as I did it grew bigger. And then I stopped. I was right at the edge of the forest, And slowly walked out. There must have been over twenty people there, sitting by the bonfire. They were of all ages, and everyone was enjoying themselves. I walked as quietly as I could past them, and went to the other side of the beach. And then as soon as I was out of eyesight by the people enjoying their bonfire, I sat down. And then someone put their arm around my chest, and there hand to my lips. I was squealing to be released but of course, they had no intention of doing that. © 2009 Stephanie JonesAuthor's Note
