Tense.

Tense.

A Chapter by Stephanie Jones

And then the doors on the other side of the room flew open. The five men that were standing around me moved slightly.

“What’s going on in here?” it sounded like a boy maybe my age or older, but I couldn’t tell because the men moved so I couldn’t be seen or see.

“There’s nothing going on here.” One of the five men just spoke.

“Well then, why are you huddling together. Boy don’t try fooling us, we ain’t stupid.”

“We got no clue what you mean.”

“I’m sure you don’t...” Someone else spoke that time. I must have had more than one hero.

It stayed silent.

“Look gent’s if you are doing nothing, than why are you standing so stiff.”

“Maybe that’s how we stand.”

“We know you feller’s, you always up to no good, if you were doing a drug deal of something we don’t care, but it’s time for you to leave this area.” Three. Three hero’s? Man I was to do a lot of thanking.

“Fine, let’s go you guys.”

I felt someone kick me in the stomach, and then the men started to leave. I watched with blurry vision as the five figures who had surrounded me, left through the door, and as two of eight men standing in the doorway, ran to help me up.

But I couldn’t move. I was afraid, shocked, scared, and in pain.

“JULIET????” Trevor. I took a breath, than I felt his hands lifting my head.

“Juliet, Juliet, talk to me please.”

My vision started coming back, but there was two Trevor’s.

“Trevor.” And I sighed leaning my head into his arm.

“Jewels, are you hurt, did they hurt you?” But I couldn’t answer I was shaking.

Then I heard Trevor speak to the other men.

“We should bring her down to our reservation, we can get her some food and water, and we have a really good doctor.”

I knew the reservation they were talking about. It was a tiny reservation, Between Brantley, and Selma. It was mostly like a trailer park area, where numerous Indians lived. They had their own school, nursing, and they were pretty far off from most people.

So why were they in Selma, the one place they barely ever went, helping me, in a train station.

“Jewels, you have got to let go of Lexi.” And with that, I realized I still was in tense, protecting mode.

I relaxed my muscles and let Trevor take Lexi from me. She was asleep in his arms. I looked up at the ceiling, it was white, calming, and there was only one of it. It was relaxing.

Then I felt warm arm’s lifting me up. I was being carried, and I only knew that because of the slight breeze. I looked around to see the other boys, grabbing my things.

I then looked at the boy carrying me, he seemed young, but most likely older than me, he had short dark brown hair, and he was tan, but obviously Caucasian. He had light brown eyes, like mine, but appeared angry, and in my mind I felt he had a thousand questions, and he couldn’t answer a single one. He looked down at me, and a smile appeared on his face, one of his questions must have gotten answered. But then the smile slowly faded as he looked into my eyes, and saw what I had seen a moment ago, anger and a million questions.

I had another dream.
