A Chapter by Stephanie Jones

Mostly everyone was still watching the television, my mom and dad, and 5 of my 8 brothers. Greg I could feel was still watching me. Two of my other brothers also stopped to stare, Duke, and Lenny. My parents picked horrible names. When we were younger and asked us why they picked our names they said they just picked whatever came to mind. Josh, Lou, Paul, Nick, and Zach remained interested in the teli. I didn’t like the silence, and how unwelcomed I was.

I coughed loudly. Everyone looked. I smiled wide at the shock on their faces, my mom and dads the most. “Hello.” I giggled. Still silent. “What, can’t a girl visit every once in a while?”

My mother rose, she looked shaken. “Who are you?” So, I guess I was right with the whole I am so beautiful they can’t recognize me theory. I decided to break the ice.

“Hi mom.” I laughed, “Dad, how has everyone been?” I looked around the room. I stared at Lenny, who looked really happy to see me.

“Juliet?” My mother spoke.

“Who else?”

“Where is Lexi?” Of course, Lexi, the one they wanted to kill.

“With friends, don’t see why it matters much, she never wants to see you again.”

My mom looked pissed. “How dare you say that to me young lady?” She started to head towards me. “You think you can leave for a week and come back, how dare you?” How dare me? “Lady, we had the police out searching for you, we thought you were dead. You go up to your room this very moment and pack your bags, you are getting sent far away, you stupid female dog.” She slapped me then.

She. Slapped. Me. Stay calm Jewels. The voice was so soothing. You have a purpose Jewels, don’t lose it yet. Yet. I’d hold onto that.

“No.” I stated.

“Excuse me?”

“What mom, are you death I said No.” I used more force this time.

“What has gotten into you, a week out on the streets and you think you can talk to me that way.” I saw her reaching again, trying to slap me, she came close but I darted my hand up and grabbed hers. Tight. Don’t lose it, was all I could hear the voice saying. I practically threw her arm to her side.

“Now you listen to me mom.” I was giving the rules now. “I am staying in town for a while, I don’t know how long, I am not staying here, I just wanted you to know I am not dead, in fact I’m great. I’m strong, and better then you all.”

My mom with a shocked face walked back a little.

“Now, I am going off to my home. I will see you all in school, maybe we can hangout. Goodbye.” I looked around the room, the boys smiling, my dad to drunk to contemplate and my mother, shocked and broken. I looked back at each of my brothers. Searching for a face. Lenny. I smiled at him and winked. I turned around, and walked out the door, down the little path and onto the road. I turned around and looked back. In the door way stood my mom and some of my brothers. Lenny sat in the window. I gave a little signal, smiled and darted. Fast as my immortal powers let me do. I ran down the road, and around the corner, I ran and ran and ran until I reached a motel. It looked nice for a night. I slowed myself to a walk. I walked through their vast parking lot and to the main door. Walked into the room, and up to the man in charge. Or at least the one at the front desk. When he noticed me walking towards him he left from his kneeling at the desk to standing up tall and fixing his tie.

“Room for one?” I smiled, and I thought he would faint. It felt like minutes were passing, “how much will a room for one be?” He shook his head as to get out of his fantasy of me.

“One night, 400 dollars.” I stuck my hand in my pocket. I remembered I had some, I just can’t remember when I did. I pulled it out. Almost all were 100’s, with some singles. Kellan. It seemed so long ago that he gave me this. I grabbed four 100’s and handed them to him. He looked a little suspicious, but handed me a room key anyways.

“Thanks.” I took the room key smiled, and turned around and walked out the front door. It was the only way to reach your room. I was on the top floor, I walked up three flight of stairs and walked past six rooms. Mine was the seventh. “Room, 305” I whispered while putting the key in and opening the door.

I flickered on the lights. The room was nice enough. One queen size bed, a mirror on a dresser, nice space, and a bathroom off in the corner. I walked over to the dresser, and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked pretty.

My eyes were purple, the really pretty light purple too. And it fit well with my purple dress I changed into earlier on. The dress was sort of like a tube top to start off with, and then it hit your stomach it fell. At the bottom it was faded to a darker purple. It was short, and stopped above my knees. I was wearing white slippers. They fit in perfectly. Finally after minutes of looking at myself I changed my look to the window. Twilight time. My favorite time of day. I walked over to the bed and sat down, staring out the window.

I was watching but didn’t pay much attention. My mind was listening to the people making noise downstairs. People coming or going, either way they were really loud. I thought about Lexi, and wondered how she was. If she missed me? I thought of Tyler, and how I left him. I thought of his face the last time I saw him, with his icy blue eyes. Matt. I thought of him every second I thought of those kind of eyes. I’d find away. Something brought me back to reality.

A scream? I looked back outside, nighttime, I looked at the clock, eight, darn, it was just five. I looked back at the window in time for another scream. That made me rise, I slid to the window. I looked through the forest, and heard the scream again. Someone was about to get hurt. I darted out the door and jumped off the railing. I landed about 10 seconds later. 60 feet drop. And I landed On my toes without making a noise, nice. What I didn’t think about was the family I landed right next to. The family with a mom and dad and two teenagers, both guys. I smiled politely and darted and I heard another scream. No time to lose.

I ran through the forest and around the trees till I was just at the back part of the meadow. There I saw it. A guy and girl. The girl looked petrified, afraid to move, but wanting to run. I knew that feeling awhile back. Then I noticed the guy. Perfect, tan, black eyes. He was staring at her. He looked ready to kill. Neither noticed me. I watched as he walked over to her and kissed her neck. She shook with fear. I grew closer. I was just on the edge, just far enough to not be seen. He kissed her neck again, and I knew those moves. I thought I’d never meet one. Tyler once explained how we usually don’t meet. They don’t live around here much. With the kiss I walked into the meadow.

“Stop.” I demanded and a growl ripped through me. The girl screamed the vampire stopped in place and smiled.

“Hello.” He spoke to me, he sounded pure. Born into the world unlike me.

“Let her go.” I demanded again, and with that he let his arms lose and drop to his sides as she fell to the ground.

“Anything else.” He looked at me and grinned. Things didn’t look very good.

“No.”

“Well than…” I knew he wasn’t finished. “I’m very hungry, and there is nobody around.” He walked closer.

“Go find your food elsewhere vamp.”

“Oh, vamp? Really now. What could I call you newborn.” He sounded jokingly serious, was that possible?

“Go find your food elsewhere.” He was closer now, and I made myself sound tougher, it didn’t seem to be working.

He was in my face now. “Make me.” He blew in my face, his breath was godly. It was the way vampires made humans week. One thing wrong though, I was immortal, and I stood strong.

“Go find your food elsewhere.” I stated with him still in his face.

“Fine.” He looked like the ones who weren’t ones to fight fair. And when he didn’t weaken me, he gave up his care for the human. “Good day.” He stated before heading off into the forest.

I looked over at the human who looked weak and fragile, and possibly broken. She was young, green eyed, and pretty. She had brown hair, that was wavy and long. She was crying, I knew how it felt. I would have cried with her, if I was the old me. I walked over to the girl, who begun to shake again.

“Hello, my name is Juliet. Are you okay?” I calmly stated.

“Uhm, yes.” She looked up at me, she felt safe.

“What is your name?” Making friendly conversation helps.

“Margarita.”

“That’s cute.” I stated.

I helped her up with one hand, “I think it’s time I got you home.”

“Yes please.” She smiled.

“Get on my back.” She looked confused at first but I helped lift her onto my back as soon as she was on I stated, “You might want to close your eyes.” Then took off towards where I came in.

When we reached the edge I slowed my pace, and helped her down. She looked like she could hardly breathe but we had to keep moving.

“Follow me.” I whispered as I led her through the small bushes. She followed me as we crossed the parking lot, and went over to the sidewalk. Stay here I said to her, as she gratefully sat down. That’s when I darted, I needed a car, and I felt like some grand theft at the moment. I ran around the corner and stopped short as I saw the car coming up the street.

The Bristol Fighter. And it was silver. You don’t see many of these cars, and not only were they rare, but also expensive, and fast. It was going 60 down the 30 mph road.

I walked into the road, then turned to face the car. The car began to slow and stopped two or three feet next to me. Then the car door opened.

“Hello there pretty.” A man stepped out. He was tall and fat. And well, I didn’t feel like playing. “What’s wrong, need a lift?” Then I looked at him.

“No.” I rushed over the where he was and took his keys from his hand, he couldn’t even see me coming. I pushed him back, so he’d move and I could get in. I hopped in and the doors dropped. I turned on the ignition and darted out of there, the man lying on the ground, confused and out of a nice car. I turned around the corner and sped up to around 80 turned the corner, and stopped the car right next to Margarita. I opened her door, and it flew up. “Get in.” She did and shut the door, and we drove.

“What are we doing?”

“Taking you home.” I simply stated.

“My house is the other way.”

“Do you really want to explain to your parents what happened?” I looked at her.

“WATCH THE ROAD!” She screamed.

“Calm down, I’m fine, just answer me.”

“No, not really.”

“Exactly.” I smiled and turned my head to look back at the main road. We took numerous turns and went about 5 blocks before reaching the destination. I stopped the car perfectly in a spot and opened the door and got out. She remained still. “Coming?”

With that she got out, joined me and we began walking towards the spot, as I beeped the horn twice.
