School?

School?

A Chapter by Stephanie Jones

I must have sat there all night, not even thinking. Just sitting, since around 3 a.m. I moved so that I was sitting up in a ball. I rested my head on my knees, and took a deep breathe. It didn’t help, it was like I could feel the air go into my lungs and just look for where it was needed before giving up and leaving me. I was better off without air. It was 5:59 A.M, and I finally decided to get up. I grabbed an outfit from one of the bags, and put it on. It was pretty. I was wearing a pink and black plaid shirt, and dark blue jeans.

It was 6:10 when I walked out the door of the motel, 6:15 when I paid for the next day in the motel, and 6:20 when I headed off to school. I decided to walk seeing that I had an hour to get there. Selma High starts at 7:25, and I was pretty excited to go back. After walking for about 10 minutes, I made a good amount of progress, before I turned my head slightly to see a car turn the corner. The car drove past me, then stopping short a few feet away from me. I crept towards the car slowly, before looking in the car mirror. I thought my heart would have stopped if it hadn’t already.

The car window opened. I crept closer.

“Hey.” He stated.

“Hello.” I said in my sweetest tone. Maybe too sweet, I thought he was stunned before he restated.

“Hey.”

“You already said that.” I smiled, and he grinned embarrassed.

“Oh, well, uhm, what are you doing up so early in the morning?”

“Walking to school.” That seemed to interest him.

“What school?”

“Selma-“ He cut me short.

“I go there, you want a ride?”

“That’s okay, it isn’t that far away.”

“Are you kidding me it’s 3 miles give or take.” He held up three fingers.

“Okay.” And with that I head to the other side of his car. I hopped in and sat gently, he started the car back up.

“By the way, I am Matt.”

“I am Juliet.” Matt, I can’t believe the boy I came back here for picked me up on the side of the road. I looked at him, and found myself pondering his gorgeous eyes.

“Ice blue.” I said, by mistake of course.

“What?” He said turning his head slightly to look at me.

“Your eyes, are ice blue.”

“Oh, yeah, they change from ice blue to midnight blue.”

“That’s pretty.” They really were.

“What about you?” He stated, this time not looking at me.

“What about me?” I tilted my head.

“Your eyes,” he paused then started back up, ”One second they are green, then light pink.” He looked at me again, “Then purple.”

“My eyes are weird.” I stated.

“I like them.” He looked back at me, but I turned my head to look out the window.

We were almost there, I could see the building, hidden behind a few trees, good old Selma High.

“Welcome to Selma High, Juliet.” Matt stated as if I didn’t already know it.

I sighed, he smiled. He took the liberty of driving extremely slow, before reaching parking spot 202. He turned off the car and looked at me. I wish the moment could have lasted forever, and it could have, I could have kissed him, and he would change, I could be with him forever, to stare into those magical ice blue eyes.

What was I thinking? Did I want him to feel how I did? No, never. I didn’t want him to be like me, for now.

I snapped back in time to hear him say, “You coming?” I hadn’t even seen him get out of the car. I smiled and hopped out, as her crossed the car to my side. I joined him in step.

“Where is the main office?”

“It’s hard to find, but I’ll show you.” He smiled at me before turning his head the other way to wave to some of his friends. We walked into the building, and as if the school was made for an idiot on the main entrance sign there was directions to each room.

Main Office. Straight ahead.

And when I looked up, the instructions proved to be correct, seeing that the office was right in front of me by 20 feet.

We headed towards the office as I opened the door.

“Uhm, thanks.” I smiled at him.

“Why did you need to go to the main office?”

“First day.” He frowned, must of felt stupid. I kept going, “I need to get my schedule and make sure my records are here. Maybe I’ll have a class with you.” He looked up at me then with big eyes.

“Maybe.” He smiled.

“Bye.” I said, giving one last glance at his ice blue eyes.

“Bye.” He said, smiling, and we stood there a few seconds, before I finally turned back and headed towards the attendance office. I couldn’t wipe away the smile on my face.

----------------------------------------

But of course the smile disappeared quick as I saw the principal. I wouldn’t say she was a cruel person, just selfish, and I didn’t like being around her, and she didn’t like me, or my family.

She noticed me quickly, maybe it was because I was unexplainably beautiful, and she smiled before changing direction and heading towards me.

“Hello my dear, I have never seen you before, what is your name?” She used her fake voice, it was very annoying.

“Juliet, ma’am.” I said politely.

“Juliet? Do you have a last name?” She gave a fake smile, was everything about her fake.

Then I had to think, I couldn’t tell her my real last name. It would give me away in a heartbeat, Juliet Snite. I honestly hated my last name, Snite, was that even a word? I had seconds to think.

“Juliet? Your last name.” She started to frown.

Think, think, think, “Sorry ma’am, it’s Sapphire, I spaced for a moment, it rarely occurs, My name is Juliet Sapphire.”The smile returned on her face.

I thought about it, I was born in September on the 24th in the year of 1993. Sapphire was my birth stone. And, maybe I was stupid for using my birth stone as a last name, but it was something.

“Sapphire? I don’t believe we have a Sapphire in our school.” She stated, giving me a weird look.

“That’s because I am new, Just moved here two days ago.”

“Oh, are you a transfer?” Once again I had to think.

“No ma’am, I was private schooled, until this year I finally decided I wanted to get an education with others.” If I transferred, I’d have to give her a school, and I honestly couldn’t say, Oh yeah, I went to Selma High.

“Oh, very interesting, are your parents with you?” Thinking again.

“No, they are dead.” I frowned, wanted the thought of family to pass.

“Oh, I am so sorry sweetheart.”

“It is okay, I live on my own.”

“Oh, well, school is starting soon, and we have a lot to do.” With that she turned and headed off to her office and I followed politely. “Please sit.” She gave a smile again, and pointed to a chair. She made a few phone calls and then we had two others in the room with us. “This is your guidance counselor Mr. Tenser, and our attendance lady Ms. Suler. Now, I have to go into a meeting, but they will help you get situated.” Then she left.

“Hello there, you must be Juliet.” Mr. Tenser said, I shook my head. “Well then, do you know anything you would like to take?”

I kept quiet.

“Well then, you can choose 8 classes, and you have to take a test.” With that Ms. Suler darted out. Mr. Tenser started up again, “It’s a leveling class thing. You know.” I did, but I grinned as if I didn’t but didn’t care. Ms. Suler returned.

“Its 20 questions, they are pretty easy, but it’s different for everyone.” Ms. Suler stated before handing me a pencil.

I opened the packet, and this was very easy. They had questions like what is a noun, and what is the Pythagoras theory. I handed it in two minutes later, and Ms. Suler looked at it nodding in approval by my mass knowledge.

“You are smart kid.”

“Thank You.” I smiled.

“So where is she being placed?” Mr. Tenser said.

“Honors and AP.” Ms. Suler stated, grinning big. It was actually kind of creepy.

“Well then, let’s get started. Is this okay with you Juliet?” I nodded in approval.

By the time we finished my schedule went as follows:

Honors Geometry – Ms. Lirsa

Honors Geography- Mr. Juckles

Honors Latin- Mr. Finikle (I already knew Spanish.)

Gym- Mr. Duferbate

AP Biology- Ms. Operb

Photography- Mr. Kenk

AP English- Mr. Sanbey

Symphonic Band- Mr. Maluso

I would be starting the year off as a sophomore, I had already had most of these teachers last year. And I played the flute, plus band sounded funner than choir.

After looking at my sheet I also noticed a girl walk into the room, but I hadn’t looked up. Then I did, she was blonde and she was pretty. But, I guess most people in this school were. I’d never met this girl before either, surprisingly.

“Hello.” I stated.

“Hello there, my name is Mariell and I am going to help you around the school.” She was polite, and was calm. I liked her already.

“Cool.” I stood up. Politely I shook her hand, her hand was rough and hard, but I wondered how my skin must have felt to her. She would probably describe it as, smooth, flawless, soft, perfect.

But everything about me was perfect, technically. Even though I had a rough past and a weird future ahead, I would have to say on the outside I was perfect and on the inside, I felt insanely amazing, not perfect, but there wasn’t much to describe me otherwise.

I followed her as we walked out the door.
